How Much Does an AI Tutor Cost per Student? (2026)

By Ritesh, founder of Keelwork Studio · Updated

The short answer
With a small, fast model and sensible limits, AI study help can cost about US$0.003 per answer in the worst case. Capped at 10 answers per student per day, that's under US$1 per student per month before caching makes it cheaper. The key is designing the caps in before launch.

The cost model

ItemAssumptionCost
Input per answerUp to ~2,000 tokens (one page of notes + question)~US$0.0006
Output per answerUp to 900 tokens~US$0.0023
Per answer (worst case)Small model at US$0.30 / US$2.50 per million tokens~US$0.003
Per student per dayCapped at 10 answers~US$0.03
Per student per monthWorst case, before cachingunder US$1
Whole platform per dayCeiling of 2,000 answers~US$6/day (~US$180/month max)

These are upper limits from the caps, not measured averages. Real spend is lower because most students don't hit the cap and cached answers are free. Model prices change. Check the current list before you budget.

The three limits that make it predictable

  1. Shared cache: when one student asks about a page, the next student asking the same thing gets the stored answer instantly, at no cost. When the page changes, the cache refreshes.
  2. Per-student daily cap: no single user can run up the bill.
  3. Platform ceiling: a hard daily maximum across all users, with an alert to a human if reached. Exam season can't surprise you.

Two more things to get right

  • Answer from your material. Grounding the AI in the page the student is reading keeps answers on your syllabus.
  • Check access on the server. Paid AI features must be enforced on the server, never just hidden in the app, and AI keys should never ship inside the app.

Questions

How much does an AI tutor cost per student?

Using a small model priced around US$0.30 per million input tokens and US$2.50 per million output tokens, one answer from about 2,000 input and 900 output tokens costs about US$0.003. With a cap of 10 answers per student per day, the worst case is under US$1 per student per month.

How do you stop AI costs from spiking?

Use three limits: a shared cache so repeated questions about the same page are answered for free, a daily cap per student, and a platform-wide daily ceiling that alerts a human.

Which AI model should an education app use?

For explaining and quizzing on a page of study material, small fast models are usually enough and cost a fraction of frontier models. Prices change often, so check the provider's current price list.
